Why We Exist
At Kwa Mali Community Forest Association, we envision a thriving, resilient community where sustainable forest management fosters both ecological balance and socio-economic growth. Our goal is to transform local landscapes into lush forests that support diverse wildlife and provide numerous benefits to the community — including a research platform for universities.
Our mission is to protect, conserve and manage the forest areas around the Kwa Mali hilltops, ensuring they are used sustainably for current and future generations. We empower local communities with the knowledge and tools needed to sustainably utilise forest resources, fostering a harmonious relationship between people and nature.
Membership
We bring together individuals, farmer groups and institutions who are committed to the sustainable management of forest resources in Lower Yatta, Kitui West, Kitui Central, Ikutha, Katulani and Mutomo Subcounties.
Our members organise into Common Interest Groups (CIGs) — from beekeepers and tree planters to hoteliers, researchers and youth bamboo growers — each contributing a unique service to the association and the wider community.

Our association provides training and resources to local communities, ensuring they have the skills necessary to effectively manage forest resources — allowing continued use and enjoyment of forest products without compromising ecosystem health.
By promoting sustainable use of forest resources, we help communities generate income and improve their quality of life — encouraging forest-based enterprises that provide economic opportunities while preserving the natural environment.
Kwa Mali CFA serves as a platform for research and development, offering educational opportunities to community members and external researchers — facilitating knowledge exchange that enhances both conservation and community well-being.
Explore
Our hilltop forests are home to a rich variety of life. We work to protect endemic species — including the endangered Dalbergia tree — alongside the many birds that beautify the landscape and the small wildlife found across the Kwa Mali hills.
Beyond Kiima-Kimwe hill, K-CFA's long-term ambition reaches toward the rehabilitation of other county-gazetted hills, combining ecological restoration with community stewardship and research opportunities for local and visiting institutions.
